KENNETH L. PABIRAN BSMARE 2 Historical background of basketball  - History of Basketball When the Game Was Born Dr. James Naismith was a canadian physical education instructor. He invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA. The first game ever played was on December 21st, 1891. The equipment used in the first game was a far cry from what is used today. A peach basket was used as the hoop, and the a soccer ball became the first basketball.    In 1891 a simple game was invented that changed the world. Basketball is a athletic sport usually played on an indoor court where two teams of five each attempt to score by shooting the basketball into one of two baskets at each end of the court. The team who scores the most baskets wins the game. Because of its continuous action and frequent scoring basketball is one of the most popular spectator sports in the world.

MARINE AIR COMPRESSOR

Image
Kenneth L Pabiran BSMarE 1 Marine Air Compressors Discuss the basic principle of air compressor. - Air compressors work by forcing air into a container and pressurizing it. Then, the air is forced through an opening in the tank, where pressure builds up. Think of it like an open balloon: the compressed air can be used as energy as it's released. Marine air compressor is an extremely important auxiliary machinery on ships and other ocean going vessels. It is used for producing compressed air, which has a number of applications on board, both in the engine and deck departments. The piston is connected to the low and high side of the suction line and discharge line. The crankshaft rotates which in turn rotates the piston. The downward moving piston reduces the pressure in the main cylinder, the pressure difference will open the suction valve. Two Basic Compression Principles: Displacement Compression and Dynamic Compression Discuss what is a marine air compressor used for on a ship. -...

micrometer caliper

KENNETH L. PABIRAN BSMARE 1 MICROMETER CALIPER Micrometer Parts and Their Main Function: As we know the micrometer has wide application in all fields of science during different scientific experiments and in engineering to measure the values of finest objects up to higher precision and accuracy. So for better understanding and to ensure the appropriate use of micrometer, first we must have to know its mechanism and basic parts, construction and main function. C-Frame : It’s a c shaped frame as identified in the picture, is a rigid part that has both holding points for a job or object to be measured. Its size depends on micrometer measuring range so size of c frame increases as range expands to bigger. Its main function is to provide basic structure of a micrometer in which stationary anvil located at one end and movable spindle slides inward or outward trough other end of c frame. Zero adjust screw: It’s a screw located back end of anvil shown in figure. As name shows it ...

TYPES OF PUMPS

Image
KENNETH L PABIRAN BSMARE 1 TYPES OF PUMPS 1. DYNAMIC PUMPS/ KINETIC PUMPS 1.1 CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS The basic principle of operation of centrifugal pumps is – force vortex flow. This means, when a body of liquid is acted upon by an external torque, it increases the pressure head of the rotating liquid. This increase in pressure is directly proportional to the velocity of the liquid.  Centrifugal pumps are used on shore for boiler feed applications, irrigation, waste management, as a booster pump, refineries, mining, air conditioning, fire fighting, food production and power generation. These pumps are used on ship's for bildge, boiler feed, fire fighting, sea water suction and general service pump. 1.2 VERTICAL PUMPS A vertical turbine pump is a specialized type of centrifugal pump that is designed to transport fluid from a reservoir that is often deep underground. Vertical pumps shall generally be located in a row or in more ...

KENNETH L. PABIRAN BSMarE 1 Learning Activity#1 Mach 2 (Lec) 1. Give the safety procedure involved in using the bench grinder. -*Fasten pedestal and bench grinders on a solid surface securely. *Ensure all the guards are in place and secure before using a grinder. *Adjust tool rests to within 3 mm (1/8 in.) of wheels. Never adjust rests while wheels are moving. Work rest height should be on horizontal centre line of the machine spindle. *Maintain 6 mm (1/4 in.) wheel exposure with a tongue guard or a movable guard. *Check that wheels have blotters on each side. *Check the wheel fits properly to the spindle when mounting. If it is loose, get another wheel. *Tighten the nuts before you turn the grinder on. *Before you plug in the grinder, manually spin the wheel to make sure it is spinning freely. 2. Image of an angle grinder showing the different parts. 3. Give all safety precautions when using angle grinder. 1.Always Wear Proper PPE.  2.Use the Proper Wheel Size.  3...

KENNETH L. PABIRAN BSMarE 1 Learning Activity #1 Mach 1 1. Give the 7 types of PPE -1.Head Protection. Typical Forms: Hard hats, bump caps, and headwear.   2.Eye Protection. Typical Forms: Safety glasses, welding helmets, face shields.  3.Hearing Protection. Typical Forms: Earmuffs, earplugs.  4.Hand Protection.  5.Respiratory Protection.  6.Foot and Leg Protection and; 7.Body Protection. 2. What are the uses of pliers? -Pliers, hand-operated tool for holding and gripping small articles or for bending and cutting wire. Slip-joint pliers have grooved jaws, and the pivot hole in one member is elongated so that the member can pivot in either of two positions in order to grasp objects of different size in the most effective way. 8 major types of pliers: 3. What are thes uses of wrenches? -Wrenches are made in various shapes and sizes and are used for gripping, fastening, turning, tightening and loosening things like pipes, pipe fittings,...

Valves and Fittings

Kenneth L. Pabiran  BSMarE 1 Common Valves that can be found on the Vessel: 1. Gate Valve A gate valve is generally used to completely shut off fluid flow or, in the fully open position, provide full flow in a pipeline. Thus it is used either in the fully closed or fully open positions. A gate valve consists of a valve body, seat and disc, a spindle, gland, and a wheel for operating the valve. 2. Globe Valve Unlike the gate valve, globe valve can be used for regulating flow or pressures as well as complete shutoff of flow. It may also be used sometime as a pressure relief valve or as a check valve. Compared with a gate valve or ball valve, the globe valve has considerably higher pressure loss in the fully open position. 3. Check Valve Check valves are generally installed in pipelines to prevent backflow. A check valve is basically a one-way valve, in which the flow can run freely one way, but if the flow turns the valve will close to protect the ...
